Daniel Conway Moncure’s massive two-volume work on demonology and devil-lore is a veritable encyclopedia of the subject matter. Conway, a former minister who has written extensively on the life of Thomas Paine and other topics, has amassed a wealth of information on the origins and evolution of belief in demons and devils. The book was widely read and contributed to the popularization of the study of demonology.

According to Conway, belief in demons and devils is a natural outgrowth of the human imagination. He gives examples of how religion has been used to explain natural phenomena as well as to justify violence and persecution. Conway also examines how the belief has been used to further religious and political agendas.

Volume 1 of Demonology and Devil-Lore begins with a discussion of the various definitions of “demon” throughout history. Conway then examines demon beliefs in various cultures, including the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. He also discusses early Christian and Jewish beliefs about demons.

The second section of Volume 1 examines how demons have been depicted in art and literature. Conway discusses how demons have been portrayed in the Bible, as well as in Shakespeare and Milton’s works.

Demonology and Devil-Lore, Volume 2 contains case studies of demon possession from around the world. Conway includes accounts of demonic possession from both the Middle Ages and more recent times. He also examines the medical explanations for demonic possession, as well as how the Catholic Church has addressed the issue.

Conway’s discussion of the various ways in which belief in demons and devils has been expressed in literature, art, and popular culture is one of the most fascinating aspects of the work. He includes in-depth analyses of Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Goethe’s Faust. The book also contains many demon-related stories and legends, such as the story of Faust and the legend of the demon Baphomet.

Demonology and Devil Lore is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the dark world of demons. It’s well-researched and well-written, and it’s a fascinating look at the history and mythology of demons. It is also an excellent resource for those interested in comparative religion.
