SLPS enjoyed a fun weekend at the 14th Annual Salt Lake City International Tattoo Convention. Vending on Saturday, March 11 and Sunday, March 12, many people came to get tattoo tarot readings a buy a few copies of Vol 1 of Enheduanna. President Daniel Cureton and Vice President Ashton Longhurst enjoyed meeting new clients, with some of previous years returning. The hum of tattoo machines buzzed through the day, with the various competitions being announced and photos for the 2017 year book being snapped. Vendors from across the country as well as outside the USA were present (Seoul Ink from Seoul, South Korea). A very interesting tap tattoo vendor came to the convention which attracted much attention from crowds.

The 6th annual Moab Pride festival took place on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Multicultural Center in Moab, UT. SLPS attended the 2015 festival and enjoyed Moab, so we decided to go back to support the community. Breakfast was at the Moab Dinner. This year’s festival was smaller, later in the day, with fewer visitors and participants. The festival still enjoyed large crowds, entertainment, and good food. SLPS did about 20 tarot and palm readings, receiving the blessings of Perun who stood quietly by on his altar. A cemetery set up for day of the dead had names of the Orlando victims, murdered LGBT citizens, and others who have passed on, evoking education about the gay bashings, youth suicide, trans murders, and the shootings in Florida.

Sunday afternoon allowed the SLPS to return to Love Muffin Cafe for breakfast before site seeing. After breakfast, SLPS visited some of the beautiful areas surrounding Moab- The Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park! Canyonlands is full of canyons carved by water and the weather over many eons. Pinyon Pine trees sit in view, shedding their nuts every fall among red rock and millions of years of geology. What magnificent landscapes Utah has in its deserts!

The 15th Annual Salt Lake City Pagan Pride Day took place on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Liberty Park in downtown Salt Lake City. Over 30 vendors came to celebrate Pagan pride, build community, share goods, services, and fellowship.

The change in venue was a necessary step in the progression, health, and building of Pagan pride. Returning it to Salt Lake City limits allowed for more access, more people to stroll through, and provided the opportunity to build awareness of Paganism. Traffic came from all over the park, as passers by, people who lived near Liberty, and overflow from the 9th and 9th Street Fair happening at the same time.

The opening ritual was performed by Crone’s Hollow, who chanted and welcomed the first timers into the community, encircling them and encouraging the old Pagans to give hugs and handshakes to the new people. Music was heard and dancers performed continually throughout the day, with a mix of country and rock. Bands like Ceol Realm and Maiden Voyage with Bellydancing by Thia and Shadow of the Moon. Several workshops took place, with president Cureton teaching a workshop on creating Pagan archives.

SLPS had a booth next to Hart’s Heart Clan of Grantsville, a Norse clan. SLPS decorated the booth with Chinese lanterns, coffee, mooncakes, and an altar was set up to Fu, the Chinese folk deity of success, to honor the Harvest Moon that happened on Friday, September 16. Fu did indeed bring the money and success, with many clients coming to the tent for $5 readings. One student of SLCC even interviewed president Cureton for a diversity project about religions in Salt Lake.

The closing rite was performed by Hart’s Hearth Clan who honored Freyja and Freyr, blessing the people with apple juice and a pine bow. Everyone left the festival feeling relieved, happy, and excited. The energy of the day was uplifting, positive, and rooted in togetherness. There was a sense of healing, that the festival provided the community a step in the right direction to heal old wounds and to move forward in fellowship. Many old Pagans commented on the change, and how everyone left with smiles. All the vendors were happy with the success of the day, committing to returning next year.

The new steering committee and leadership of Pagan Pride wanted to be more inclusive, so they invited non Pagan vendors such as the Utah Chapter of the Horror Writers Association to connect Pagans to resources and opportunities in the community. UCHWA helps writers write, edit, and has publishing opportunities. They were very happy, “We loved it, we sold many books and all of the 2nd anthology we published last year that we brought we us. Many folks are interested in joining. We’ll be back next year!” Commented Cody Langille.

SLPS attended the 5th Annual Salt City Steamfest, reading steampunk tarot and palm readings for the attendees. The convention was held at the Utah Cultural Center in West Valley from Friday, August 12-Sunday, August 14, 2016.

The convention featured many vendors and artist from across Utah and the West, with some driving in from Nevada, Colorado, and Washington. AnomalyCon, Denver’s steampunk and alternative history convention had a booth promoting their convention. Many people played with animals thanks to Creature Encounters who brought snakes, scorpions, hissing cock roaches, and tarantulas. Music and various performances as well as panels happened throughout the three days, ranging from Victorian weaponry and steampunk world building, to the fate of steampunk and airships building. A dead poet’s poetry slam saw dead poets rise from the grave to participate: Edgar Allen Poe, William Shakespeare, Richard Brautigan, Johnny Cash and others. The top three were William Shakespeare, Johnny Cash and Richard Brautigan, with the final winner being Brautigan, who received $50.

A wonderful fashion show displayed historic costumes in almost pristine condition thanks to the Margot L. Shott Historic Fashion Collection from the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Fashion Institute. The dresses were owned by a wealthy woman and had a chance to survive instead of being worn out as many were by the common folk. The whole collection at SLCC contains about 1900 pieces of historical clothing.

Sunday brought a delightful race of airships. Contestants raced up and down the lawn of the cultural center between light polls, using airships built from cardboard. A farewell ceremony was held for the creator and organizer Nickoletta Sauniere who started the convention in 2012. No one has stepped up to take over, so the fate of the convention is in the air (like an airship!) until further notice, with many folks nervous that it may collapse and fade into Victorian history.
